The Significance of Summerville

Summerville is the front in our struggle to maintain the status of citizens within our Blue Island, the progressive enclave which is the SC Lowcountry in and around Charleston. The people of Brownsville and Lincolnville are currently the object of an officially sanctioned program of gentrification which will dilute and ultimately eliminate their neighborhood’s historically working class and African American character. This in turn will lead to a series of renovations, subdivisions and upsells which will later eject middle class white buyers with a series of wealthier buyers, ultimately from elsewhere. It's the same model which has destroyed downtown Charleston and has a relentless, profit driven hunger for any authentic looking walkable historic community.

April’s surprise appearance of 1000 people on main street in Summerville surfaced a sleeping resistance in and around Flowertown. On Sunday, we’ll put boots on the ground to expand and build it in preparation for the following Saturday’s No Kings demonstration and the start of Five Weeks for Freedom, Liberate Our Lowcountry.

Mobile Boots on the Ground in and Around Flowertown

We'll conduct an initial, informal, friend-to-friend outreach effort to prepare the community for No Kings Weekend and the Start of Five Weeks for Freedom, Liberate the Lowcountry, on Sunday Afternoon in Brownsville, Summerville, Nexton, Lincolnville, and Ladson.  This will be a highly mobile operation, operating from a mobile control center. After our initial meeting and briefing, we'll move out into Brownsville and then North into Nexton, and South into Lincolnville and Ladson. Our goal is to bring friends and associates into involvement to prepare for other outreach efforts and finally the No Kings rally in Summerville the following Saturday. For details, contact William Hamilton 843-870-5299 or wjhamitlon29464@gmail.com . This effort will be driven by the issues on our Mary Flag, the new version of which will be raised for the first time in Summerville on No Kings day.

Brownsville is the traditional name for the predominantly African American half of Summerville on the East side of the Railroad tracks in Summerville. On Sunday, Linda Saylor and other leaders will share some of its history of resistance. You'll have the chance to stand on the porch where her grandfather held off the Summerville Klan with a shotgun while a young Linda stood beside him. Fortunately for you, we don't think Sunday will be that intense, but we do anticipate contact with MAGA elements, who track our activities in Summerville closely as part of a larger effort to gentrify Brownsville. Linda and her friends can tell you which current gentrifiers and MAGA have which Klansman for a Grandfather or great-grandfather. We are, however, committed to peaceful resistance, so we won't be getting the shotgun out, which her family still treasures.

We'll reset the operation at about 3 pm for a second shift, concentrating on outlying areas from 3 to 5.

After 5pm, we plan to gather at a local inexpensive restaurant for a Dutch treat dinner and discussion.
