Charleston, will have an informal coffee discussion in the patio area of City Lights Eastside. (12 Line St., Charleston, SC 29403) Thursday, June 19th. At 10:15 am.

City Lights is not involved in the Lawsuit. We're just getting coffee from them.

Bring your ideas and questions so we can work together to gather and organize the evidence needed to move Brown v Charleston forward to victory and the return of real free speech to an aging City that desperately needs it.

The profoundly disturbing video of City of Charleston mounted police officers threatening to trample peaceful protestors chanting and walking down King Street, Saturday June 14, in a fully legal gathering (less than 25 people requires no permit) shows that the mere filing of litigation hasn’t brought the City to an understanding that tourism does not trump free speech.

Two more major rallies were held in Charleston last weekend, each drawing over a thousand people. Both were held without access to an adequate PA system. That  is more proof that the City is trying to exile free speech. Two City Sponsored Spoleto programs were held in Hampton Park where PA was used. The City cannot constitutionally choose to amplify amusement for tourists while muffling the free speech of American Citizens.

The Charleston Democratic Socialists of America are conducting their own fight for free speech, attending council meetings, committee meetings and preparing a “People’s Campaign” set to launch an “economic fast” in the City of Charleston with a press conference set for Wednesday and a launch Friday.  That combined with the horrifying video of mounted police officers threatening peaceful and legal protestors isn’t going to be good for Charleston’s all important Tourism economy.

In contrast, Summerville accommodated over 3000 protestors on Saturday morning with no arrests or violence. Charleston’s program for driving free speech out of the city seems to be working.  Several PA systems were operating in Summerville, most playing upbeat music.

This event is part of Liberate Our Lowcountry, Five Weeks for Freedom and takes place on Juneteenth, a date on which we celebrate our African American Freedom Heritage. This and other #CHSresist events that day are on our #TIDELCact calendar.
